We were invited to propose how redundant or under-utilised ‘backland’ sites could be re-developed. Our response attempted to reconcile the requirements of sense of place within a ‘land locked’ setting and the environmental considerations of achieving CSH Level 4. We proposed a generous communal space onto which all the houses address, providing the development with a sense of identity and structure. The building forms and materials of large slate pitched roofs, heavy bases and render draw on the traditional Essex vernacular.
