Part F 2010 - Where to Start

The 2010 edition of Approved Document F sets out possible strategies that should, if executed correctly, ensure good ventilation
regardless of the level of airtightness. This guide will help the smaller house builder decide which strategies are most appropriate
for their developments. It follows a similar format to ‘Part L – where to start: An introduction for house builders and designers’ by
working through the possible solutions on a range of common house and apartment types and it, too, aims to cut through and distil
the detail of the Approved Document.

Part L 2010 - Where to Start

Written and published for NHBC Foundation by Richards Partington Architects in 2011, this guide is a starting point for builders and designers to understand the 2010 changes to Part L1A of the Building Regulations. The guide can be downloaded from the Planning Portal.

"This guide is not prescriptive but explains, in simple terms, ways for new homes to comply with the revised Approved Document. It allows builders and designers to compare a variety of approaches to achieving compliance and is a good starting point for discussions with energy assessors, suppliers and Building Control on the detailed design that will then follow. The challenge of this revision to Approved Document L and future changes must not be underestimated and I do hope you find this guide useful."

BLCH Guide 2: Concrete

Good practice in building can only be achieved through the collaboration of many parties throughout the processes of design, construction, assessment and commissioning. This guide explains some of the improvements in building techniques and processes that will be necessary for the delivery of low and zero carbon housing and are produced with the assistance of industry sponsors. The guide covers a different construction system and includes an explanation of the key issues, checklists for designers and contractors, together with a case study.

Al Gore

Adaptation – Transformation

Designed by OPX

Richards Partington Architects have a substantial portfolio of work involving listed and historical buildings. Many of these projects required complicated and sensitive alterations that have been skilfully inserted whilst preserving the distinctiveness and significance of the original context. Key to our success is the inventive solution of practical issues - accessibility, building fabric performance and energy conservation - whilst preserving and enhancing the 'presence' of the retained building.

The consistent high quality of our work results from a combination of creativity and hard work. We are able to balance innovation with delivery; intuition with clarity of thought; and research with good practice. We start each project with an open mind and without preconception about style or aesthetic. Inspiration and invention come from the working relationships within the project, from the site or context, from the brief or from the enthusiasm of the participants. This inspiration is sustained through a process of drawing, modelling, calculation, animation and illustration.

Sustainable Urban Design : An Environmental Approach

"The authors of Sustainable Urban Design form part of an increasingly persuasive group demonstrating that urban renaissance can make a key contribution to the environment. Their work takes us one step further to realising a twenty-first century characterised by environmentally responsible cities powered by solar energy. As more of us become city dwellers, we must ensure that our urban environment is as dynamic and as energy efficient as possible."
